The Spymistress by Jennifer Chiaverini

5.0

When I saw this book at Books A Million it was in the $3.97 discount section and you might've thought that indicated it's overall quality. I had first heard of Elizabeth Van Lew when I read Karen Abbot's "Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in The Civil War" and reading this fictionalized take on Miss Van Lew actually really surprised me. I enjoyed her characterization and Lizzie's sense of patriotism and compassion even in a society that disparaged her. She was compassionate, forward thinking, and took a great risk in doing what she deemed right, and I think Mrs. Chiaverini captured that.
