The Fever
by Megan Abbott
Meh. None of the characters had any sort of personality; everything we supposedly "know" about them, we're told, not shown. All of the teenage girls are the same, and they're treated in this weird, patriarchal, almost patronizing way, like they're fragile and beautiful and must be protected by their parents from every danger. And speaking of danger, outside of one instance, the mysterious illness that takes down so many girls is never totally clarified or explained. At the end I was left wondering: what's the point? This one definitely fell short for me.
