The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen

Caleb is a football player in high school with an unusual superpower—he feels other people’s emotions. But one person’s feelings impact him the most: his high achieving but lonely classmate, Adam. He may not have a superpower, but Caleb notices something special about him. As the boys become friends and that friendship deepens into something more, they discover unnerving things about the world around them while also learning how to support each other’s particular needs. My therapist training compels me to add that it’s a good example of emotion identification and managing difficult emotions, and that’s something I appreciate.

I liked this novel. There’s something about it that feels a bit different—perhaps it’s the unusually detailed descriptions of the emotions of every person in a scene, or the choice of such an odd superpower. After all, you can’t fight crime lords and supervillains with empathy. However, I had trouble connecting with the characters. This book felt like an introduction, light on plot, but I think that’s because it’s an informal prequel to the podcast, The Bright Sessions. All in all, it’s worth a read!
