So I read, and was totally surprised by how much I loved, the first book in this series (My Roommate is a Vampire) last year. To be clear, I love romance and vampires, so I figured I would enjoy it. The surprise was the balance of fun and sweetness and humor and good dialogue and cutesy writing stylistic touches that fit really well, and it all added up to a surprisingly wonderful reading experience. So, when this year started out on the incredibly terrible foot that it has, I grabbed the second one to hopefully comfort and escapist read myself into better mental health.

Anddddd yes. My Vampire Plus-One was just as freaking hilarious and endearing as the first. The continued use of cutesy stylistic touches, in this case the bullet journaling, the Discord bullet journal group convos, the short text (meeting minutes, emails, bullet journal entries, etc.) intros to each chapter, the back-and-forth texting and emails between MCs, etc. remained a highlight. Sometimes that stuff can be too sweet for me, but in this case, I wanted it badly and it delivered. As another highlight, the dialogue also remains spectacular - a major make or break point in all books for me. I also want to say that, normally, I dislike miscommunication as a trope in romances, but the way it was written and played out here was unique and funny and I found myself liking it.

As for the relationship, I liked Reggie and Amelia a lot. Super sweet. I really appreciate, similar to the way the miscommunication trope was used in a fresh way here, that the opposites attract was equally fresh. That Reggie was so into Amelia as a “straight laced CPA,” not in the typical "let me unbutton her/loosen her up" way, but in a "I am impressed and turned on by her organization" way, really made my heart happy. I laughed out loud at the way that CPA knowledge actually saved the day big in the end - so fun! And as with the last book, this lighthearted take on vampires that you don’t normally get made for such an enjoyable reading experience. I mean, I love all vampires, broody and serious and anachronistic and all. But in this case, Reggie's fun-loving and no-harm-caused pranking with an eclectic sense of style and a joy in making people laugh and lighten up was such refreshing escapism.

This second book is maybe not quite as good as the first, but it definitely stands up and brought the joy I needed from it.
