The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay
4.0

I easily tire of the 24-hour outrage cycle on the news, so I've sought more timeless sources. I decided to read the Federalist Papers despite my not having liked the excerpts I'd read in college. Reading all 85 gave them a coherence and energy that I missed when I read bits and pieces. Despite their age, these essays are timeless. I was surprised how often I recalled their forceful arguments while reading about, say, impeachment or the president's claim of absolute authority over state governments. If you want to understand the United States government, read the Constitution. If you've read the Constitution and you want the directors' commentary, pick up the Federalist Papers.
