I remember when I originally read the first three books in "The Selection" series I felt like the author had dragged things out a bit. I always thought it would have been better if there had just been 2 books, instead of 3. After reading the additional books - "The Heir" and "The Crown" I think Kiera Cass actually needed to drag out her story a little longer in order to fully develop the relationships and romance she was creating. So maybe I was wrong about the original books, maybe they also would have felt incomplete had they been shorter. "The Crown" needed at least 50 more pages of relationship growth and development for me. I knew early on in the first book who would end up "winning" the selection, I did question and doubt if I was correct a few times, in the end, I was right. So although it was a tad predictable, I liked who she chose. I just didn't love how their relationship and honesty with each other lasted all of what, 20 pages? before the end of the book.
The other issue I had with this book was Maxon. I LOVED him in the original books. It's a huge part of what kept me reading the story! But in this book he just rolls over and hands over his title, responsibility, and everything he's worked for with no qualms. No king, especially Maxon, would respond the way he did to Eadlin's proposal. It seemed completely unrealistic, as well as the fact that everyone went along with it. WHAT? It didn't work for me.
I know it's popular to add gay characters to stories nowadays, even the t.v. show "Once Upon a Time" has now done it! But it is not something I enjoy to read about. I don't need that as a part of my story thank you very much. It adds nothing to the story, if anything it takes away from the story. So no thank you next time Kiera Cass.
