The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

5.0

Like most of us, I read The Great Gatsby for the first time in high school. I enjoyed the book, mainly due to already having a deep adoration for the 2013 film. Also, I've always been head over heels for the Roaring Twenties.

Reading this novel many years later, I love it even more, but for a different reason. Fitzgerald’s prose is so good! It’s wry, cultivated, and the perfect amount of poetic. I could read this novel multiple times just to experience the elegant writing again.

I love Jay Gatsby. Yes, his love for Daisy is very flawed. Yes, it quite literally leads to his demise. Yes, it nearly drove him insane. However, we have to admit that Gatsby had finesse.

Honestly, I never liked Daisy. I always saw her as a bad person. However, after revisiting the novel, I realized that Daisy is a victim. She's a woman stuck in a period where men control her life. This revelation made me wonder what else I've interpreted as black and white about this novel.

There are many lessons to take from this novel. I can see why it’s required reading in the United States ( at least it was when I was in school.) It’s truly a timeless read that’s accessible to the masses. I highly recommend it if you like modern classics or classics in general.
