Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson

I guess I haven't read an epic fantasy in a long time and it shows. I had to suspend my disbelief at times, what with the eternal Medieval Stasis and huge timespans thrown about willy-nilly. However after I stopped caring about that, I got a good story with an interesting plot and lovable characters.
I'd listened to an audiobook narrated by Ralph Lister, and his performance was _amazing_ - he gave each character a voice, and there were _many_ of them. I find it helps me a lot - where I'd normally get lost in a paper book because I keep forgetting who is who, hearing each character spoken in a different voice helped them stick. Not to mention what a delight listening to some of them was. (For me Kruppe and the T'lan Imass, for instance.)
Looking forward to the next one.
