R.F. Kuang writes in the most captivating style, exposing her (unreliable) narrator’s rawest/darkest thoughts in a way which makes it challenging for the reader to disentangle truth from reality. This produces a particularly chilling effect with such a shockingly distorted perspective. A truly gripping and thrilling story, Yellowface explores a writer’s unraveling as she inadvertently isolates from the world while becoming more heavily engaged online and obsessed with her own legacy. Kuang brilliantly depicts unsettling scenes of blatant racism and cultural appropriation alongside the main character grappling with trauma, loneliness, grief, shame, and the role of social media woven through it all through.
