I think this being “another side of Pride and Prejudice” was to its detriment. Yes it’s fun to see characters and moments from Austen’s book appear in this, but in the same way it’s fun to see Stan Lee cameo in Marvel films. Sure you can point and go “omg HIM” but… what does it add. It just made me want to read P&P instead.
The romance was both obvious and uncompelling, and resolved with little satisfaction. I did enjoy Sarah, and her relationships with Polly and Mrs Hill, but her romantic plotlines seemed as though they were there only because they were expected.
I had trouble following the narrative at times too, as the close third person perspective shifted from character to character with little indication that it had changed, often within the same paragraph. I enjoyed the multiple points of view, and the rounded look at Regency service life, but I think they could have been better separated.
