Eco's novels are great but I personally feel that his true genius comes out in his essays.
An Eco essay is always the same - it starts off with a banal premise and then he descends into the philosophical conundrums that the premise has and then he blasts off into something totally different while retaining those philosophical notions. He makes it seem simple but the thoughts behind his essays are quite complex.
