The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb

5.0

I was immediately drawn into this book and the characters - there are four main characters and the point of view switches between them frequently to great effect. I also really enjoyed how the passage of time was marked by the messages sent between the pigeon keepers in the different cities. The world building was artfully done, never telling the reader outright how things are in this world but plunging you right into it to learn about the world as you live it with the characters.

Where this book ended didn't feel like the end of a story though, just a pause in the middle. While this was kind of frustrating since I really want to know what happens next, it was effective in making me desperate to get my hands on the sequel so that I can know what happens next!

Some major TWs though - in addition to fantasy dragon violence, there is a character (not a main character thank goodness) who is an emotionally abusive rapist who is involved in two of the main character's lives. There is a short scene of marital rape and another short flashback scene with dubious/non-consent.
