Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker

5.0

My 5th grader is reading this book for school so I decided to read it as well so that I can discuss it with him. I’ve read some criticism about this book- the critics claim that Smucker does not portray the lives of slaves to be as harsh as they really were. However, this book was written for children, and I think in that context it is a great read. As an adult I really enjoyed it as well, but reading it made me want to read some true accounts of the lives of slaves during this time period in the United States. Next I would like to read “The Narratives of Fugitive Slaves in Canada” or another similar book.
