abesum 's review for:
Vampire Hunter D
by Hideyuki Kikuchi
I enjoyed this novel. What I liked most about it was the concept and setting. The mix of medieval, gothic, and robotic technology was unique. Even though the author tends to info-dump, I felt that it was necessary and done in a direct way that i found myself appreciating.
I found the main characters interesting and compelling. D is written to be mysterious, and I enjoyed the setup of slowly learning about who and what he is. At first, I was unsure of how to feel about Doris. My first impression was that she was going to lean very heavily into the tropes put on women in 80s novels. As the story went on, though, I liked her more and more.
I understand that this is an English translation, and some things will be lost because of that, but I felt like the prose needed some work. Some parts felt like I was reading plot notes and not full scenes.
I look forward to continuing this series. This was a great setup book.
