Take Your Breath Away by Linwood Barclay

4.0

It’s so hard for a thriller to be 5 stars, but this one was good because it was mind-bending (who IS that woman? Is it his wife?) and compulsively readable (narrated by a character and an omniscient narrator in alternating chapters, when something happens, you HAVE to keep reading).

Andrew Mason is away on a fishing weekend with a buddy when his wife Brie disappears. He’s the prime suspect for a while, hounded by a detective and his sister-in-law, but Brie never turns up. Six years later, a woman who looks just like her appears at their former house, their grocery store, at her mother’s hospital, causing everyone to wonder what could have happened to Brie all those years ago and who this woman is now. In the interim, Andrew has gotten into a new (super complicated) relationship and tried to move on, but the past is only one not-so-dead wife away.

The plot is a touch convoluted with lots of supporting characters, motives, and drama, but you just have to keep reading to find out what will happen. There’s a bit of grit and gore in the end, if that’s not your thing, but it may “take your breath away” once or twice.
