Heartless by Marissa Meyer

5.0

I read the inside cover and told myself, okay remember this should be read as a PREQUEL to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland so don't get your hopes up; and I quickly forgot this and was actually hoping for the best for the characters and thinking of every loophole that could exist (doppelgängers could exist in the Kingdom of Hearts right? RIGHT?!). Then I had the slow realization who the Queen of Hearts is as a character. The Queen of Hearts is one of my favorite fictional characters (my first tattoo inspired by her) and when "Heartless" came out I was very reluctant but eventually gave in to the audiobook, AND THAT WAS THE BEST DECISION EVER. Rebecca Soler is amazing and the variety of character voices she provided was astounding, and the way she was able to transform Cath from this whimsical (mostly whiny) person into a cold and cruel being was pure perfection. My only complaint was the predictability of the "villain" (no spoilers but I don't want to consider this person as a villain we still don't know for sure if they were in their right mind when attacking). I would absolutely recommend to anyone who is a fan of the Wonderland-esque books that are out there including the "Splintered" series and "The Looking Glass Wars".
