They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South by Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers

challenging informative tense slow-paced

5.0

The archival research done is extensive in illustrating the history of white women's role in slavery in the American south. Listening to the audiobook definitely helped me follow along the moving pieces of historical evidence, especially when the book covered how white women participated in the slave trade. There are parts that are hard to read because the history is  grim, but an important read to challenging and complicating the historical and contemporary narratives around white women's role in history and slavery.
