Review of “Surviving the City: Volume 3 ”
How I read: 📖
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Rating System Below)
“Surviving the City: Volume 3” is a powerful and deeply moving conclusion to the series, and once again, it absolutely knocked it out of the park. The illustrations are as stunning as ever, and the storytelling is both poignant and captivating. This volume hit home especially hard, dealing with the aftermath of the COVID shutdowns and the discovery of 215 children’s remains at a former residential school, shedding light on the horrors Indigenous people have faced and fought to be heard about for so long.
What makes this installment particularly impactful is how it intertwines personal growth with historical reckoning. Miikwan and Dez are on the verge of adulthood, and their struggles with future plans are suddenly overshadowed by the weight of their people’s painful history. The way the story addresses the collective grief and anger from these discoveries, while also showing the resilience and strength of the characters, is remarkable. It reminds readers that the injustices endured by Indigenous communities must never be forgotten.
This volume left me deeply reflective, especially in how it highlighted the importance of remembering and honoring those who were lost, while also emphasizing the strength of community and the power of action. It’s a fitting and emotional end to a brilliant series that I would recommend to anyone looking to understand both the historical and ongoing struggles of Indigenous people.
