A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest

3.0

This is a story that will suck you in. No pun intended. The writing style kept me turning the page and considering how short the book was I was able to finish it in a few hours.
Plot: It is a lot like many other vampire book plots sad to say. It is the Stockholm Syndrome vampire type plot; girl gets captured against her will, she is told she is a slave for a vampire prince, they feel this odd connection/chemistry with each other, meanwhile the vampire coven is being hunted down by vampire hunters.
Characters: Derek, the vampire prince love interest, is like no other vampire I ever read before. To put it simply he is a "nice" vampire. Bland personality and all. When he woke from his 400 year sleep he was surprised by the fact that his coven captures humans for slaves...Really? I find it hard to believe that vampires didn't have human slaves back in the 1600's. Not only that but he fell for Sophie hard and fast. Even saying "I can't imagine life without you." in a less than 200 page book. I'd say that's too fast.
I know a ton of romance novels use the "we have this weird attraction toward each other" to speed up the romance process without actually getting the characters to actually know each other. This gets redundant and just seems like the easy route. On that note I would like to say I'm glad she denied his first kiss. Good for her for being aware of where it would lead.
I liked Sophia except there was one discrepancy that confused me. When she was captured she was walking along the beach at night in her swimsuit because she had plans to go swimming. Correct me if I'm wrong but a person with a supposedly high IQ (find that out later) would never go swimming at night in the ocean (shark food..?). Why have her in a bathing suit in the first place? What does that contribute to the plot and character development?
This gets a 3/5 for being too short and forgettable. I have a feeling if I got all the books that are out right now all at once and read them straight through I would rate it higher.
