The Surrogate by Penelope Ward

5.0

It was everything I expected and more! I loved Sigmund Benedictus in The Aristocrat and wanted, so much, to read his story. The author didn’t disappoint and gave us a story about this hero tortured by his loss, living an empty life, never opening the doors to love. Well, in this book he got Abby, and there was no chance he could resist!

In The Aristocrat, we read how he met and fell in love with Britney. It was tragic because she had cancer and only lived six months after their meeting. From the moment they met, bickering over a place in an flight, they were never apart. As Sig says, she was his soulmate, and although there were difficult moments, there were also beautiful ones.

In a very surprising move, his in-laws made a strange request. Britney had frozen her ovary eggs and they wanted to have a grandchild from them. And they wanted him to to be the father! They had already chosen a surrogate, and were waiting for his acceptance. This was very difficult, it opened the doors to his heartbreak, and yet he couldn’t say no.

What we get after this is such a beautiful story of loss, of new chances, of encountering beauty and love and comfort from a woman who was equal parts angel and sass. Abby was purity in the form if a young woman who didn’t take his grumpiness but gave back as good as she got. Many times she left him gobsmacked which was the perfect method to jump-start his heart again.

I loved seeing Sig trying to resist, then coming for more because Abby was just so irresistible, then retreating in fear again. Abby was relentless in being such a good person, giving Sig acceptance and understanding. He felt seen like never before, took so much support from this woman who was fast becoming necessary. Watching Sig learn to care for this woman, then accepting he loved her and wanted her happiness over his was just beautiful.

I loved the banter, how funny Abby was, Sig’s caustic wit, loved the moments with Leo and Felicity, seeing Ludicrous again, Lavinia who is mother/aunt/best friend/nosy roommate. It was perfect and heartwarming, angsty and happy. I couldn’t have wished for a better story for Sig!
