Give Me a God I Can Relate to by Blythe Baird

5.0

Read this book. All of you.

I picked this up intending to read the first couple of poems and get a feel for it, and was so instantly hooked that I ended up reading the entire thing in one sitting.

Baird's is exactly the kind of poetry that I love most; beautifully written and yet bold enough to not try and hide its intensions behind overly frilly language or images. These poems have important things to say, and they are going to say them unashamedly.

I finished every single poem thinking, 'Yes, Blythe. You're so right'. The prominent themes explored include feminism, sexuality, eating disorders and sexual abuse. They are all poignant, relatable, eloquent and accessible, and so whether new to poetry or a seasoned reader of the form, if you want a collection that will hit you in the gut, I highly recommend this wonderful book.
