American Street

Really got lost in this one. Beautifully written, well-crafted story that won my heart with the humanity of its characters and the magical realism woven throughout. Authenticity drives almost every part of this book, from the story itself to the threads of magic and character dynamics. I just feel...uncertain about the ending, and not in the way I normally love. I feel like the end was overall a bit rushed, and even just having a little bit more of the conclusion to let us process everything would've helped it feel more "tied up," even with an open-ended finale. Regardless, this is a beautiful book and a wonderful read.
There are far, far worse worlds to get lost in. That isn't to say that this story is without its heartache (far, far from it.) But I think there's something to be said for a story that can capture so much of reality of our world--both what's ugly and what's beautiful--and still allow us to get lost in its pages.
