Dead Rinker by Ruth Stilling
5.0
Okay nothing could have prepared me for how amazing this book was, why hadn't I read any of Ruth's books sooner, and JJ (Jenson) just is the most deliciously patient and loving MMC. Oh, and you need tissues, if, like me, you experience some serious emotions that threaten to break your heart.
Kate is our FMC, and man oh man, her walls are there for some seriously sad reasons. There is so many complexities to Kate, but it all makes sense as the story evolves. There are some characteristics of her that literally broke my heart. Even though she is part of this bigger group of friends, very few truly know her.
JJ (Jenson) is the goalie for the Seattle Scorpions, and his life has seemingly been the opposite of Kates, but there is a key moment that changed him, again, not something well known, but also saw him battling with some real emotions. He and Kate travel in the same circle of friends, but after onerous flirting by JJ, and misunderstanding by Kate, these two become "enemies". Their bitterness threatens to derail the upcoming nuptials of friends, something which JJ tries to remedy before those nuptials only for Kate to brush him off.
Well, let's just say, the wedding of their dearest friends sees the two "enemies" decide to scratch the itches and in a moment everything changes. OMG if this part wasn't emotional enough for me (IYKYK), JJ begins to truly show Kate what friendship and love truly looks like, no strings, no conditions, no unrealistic expectations, just him, and this makes you feel giddy, emotional and just in awe. Kate and JJ navigating a pregnancy that, although unexpected, provides the perfect backdrop of JJ showing Kate everything she is, she deserves and needs, and what a truly good, beautiful partner/man is. I just cannot say how much these two just.....this book just......I loved it, had it read in one day......wished I could give it more.....and now have to read more from Ruth as her writing just gets me. This is one of my favourite couples this year. And, think I can officially understand why hockey romance is so popular.
