Forever Reign by V.B. Lacey

5.0

I thought I had already posted my review, but guess I didn’t.

I was incredibly lucky to receive an arc for this book, my very first arc. And it did not disappoint.

Following the conclusion of the first book, this one takes off three months after. Everything has changed, not just for Isla, but for everyone. They’re all lost, scattered around, and unsure of how to move forward and what steps to take next.

When they’re brought together again, not all is what it seems and danger lurks from all sides. We got deeper looks into the characters in this book. In such a short amount of time, they’ve all changed so much.

There’s no mistaking that these characters are flawed. But that’s what makes them so relatable. I loved watching them come to terms with not only the end of book one, but there new places in life. Some were able to settle in and thrive, some were stuck and lost, and one in particular was filled with guilt and self-hatred as they tried their best to fix the problems created by the past. It was wonderful watching them grow.

I love that there are so many strong female characters, that also have times where they show weakness. No one wants a character that’s strong all the time. There has to be moments where the character breaks down, shows fear, makes mistakes, and apologizes for those mistakes. V.B. Lacey was able to create such characters with depth and layers. And by doing so, created relatability.

The world building was just as great as it was in the first book. It was nice to really explore some of the other places. There was a greater feel of the world as more kingdoms and people were introduced. I loved the addition of Anna. She very quickly became a favorite.

Overall

This, in my opinion, was a successful conclusion to an amazing debut. The characters grew—and at a believable pace, the plot was engaging, and the world building was amazing. I’ve felt such a wide range of emotions while reading this, including overwhelming anxiety a few times. Both this and the first book have solidified their places in my favorite reads of the year list.

I can’t wait to see what V.B. Lacey has planned next.
