The Boss by Melanie Moreland

dark emotional fast-paced

3.0

No strong representation of diverse characters or minority identities.

Quick Take: A dark romantic suspense novel that boasts a sweet romance yet proves vexing with its double standards.

*** there’s no physical abuse in the MCs relationship. However, there are some scenes that can be off-putting for some:
—— the couple have a discussion after a heated argument where the Hero mentions he stayed away because he was angry, feeling out of control and scared he would’ve physically lashed out:

“I was angry.”

“I know. You wouldn’t let me touch you.”

“I was afraid if you did, I might hurt you, Evie.”

Her eyes widened. “You would have struck me?”

“No.” I paused. “I don’t know. I doubt it, but I felt as if I was out of control. I wanted to punish you. I couldn’t be around you.” I cleared my throat. “In that moment, I was no better than the scum you had run away from.”

She inched closer, her little body pressed to mine. She laid her hand on my cheek. “But you are. Don’t you see, Matteo? You didn’t hurt me. You walked away. You are a hundred times the man he ever was.”

Then she swallowed. “But you not speaking to me hurt me more than the physical blow would have.”

—— Heroine is unable to leave the house without Hero’s permission because he has enemies.
• Reference to kidnapping
