Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno

4.0

At first this felt VERY YA, but I pushed through because I loved Horrid by Katrina Leno, and I'm so glad I read this one till the end because boy did it take an unexpectedly dark turn! So don't be fooled by the cover like I was; there are a couple trigger warnings in this book, such as rape and death of a loved one. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy magical realism, a subtle magic system, and characters with varying powers as opposed to everyone having all the same supernatural abilities. This is such a cute yet hard-hitting story about a family with a bad rep living on this little island all their lives, featuring two sisters discovering new things about themselves and their history.
