Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie
4.0

This was the first Agatha Christie book I've ever read. We chose it for book club for it's holiday theme. We blew through it--I personally finished reading it in 3 days. It was a quick read and last night, I wanted to find out whodunnit so I stayed up 45 minutes later than I meant to so I could finish it. I thought the whole plot was interesting, introducing all these characters with potential motives, which ended up being spelled out by M. Poirot near the end. Good thing he was there, otherwise no one would've figured it out because it was a double inside job--inside the house and inside the police force. I did enjoy the slight twists in who a couple of the characters turned out to be. There were definitely some allusions to the outcome throughout the book.

I guess the only thing that didn't close the loop was why Sugden chose to do it then. How did he know Simeon Lee was going to invite his whole family to Christmas that year? It seems like he didn't and the only way he could've gotten away with that crime at all was if the whole family was there--and if M. Poirot wasn't. I wonder if he got super scared when M. Poirot showed up? He should've know the jig was up once he saw him. When else would Sugden have done it and tried to get away with it? I guess with Horbury, he could've pinned it on him somehow or just left it as an unsolved case if the whole cord thing was his plan the entire time since he came up with it. I still don't entirely understand the cord thing, either. How could a cord upturn heavy furniture the way it did? And the sound of the pig bladder--is that like a whoopee cushion? I guess I'm not sure what that sound could be like besides a whoopee cushion type thing.

Overall, a fun read. I enjoyed the details, clues, and character motives. My aunt has read a couple of Agatha Christie's books a week for the past couple months. I think she might be trying to read all of the books she's ever written, which is a lot.
