The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis

4.0

all hail Aravis for marrying someone so she can more conveniently quarrel with him

more seriously though, i enjoyed this book. i adore the writing style of the Narnia books - the narration, the descriptions, the dialogue. the plot isn’t just a simple journey, meaning there are lots of side stories (that do not feel like they’re detracting from the overall story!) and difficulties that the characters must solve, as well as lighter moments, but it’s still a kids book yk? it’s got that distinctive Narnia tone.

and i also rather liked the characters. Shasta is fun and kinda dumb, and his reactions to the situations he gets himself into are funny. Bree and Hwin were good, they balance each other i think. and even though Aravis is a rich girl and kinda judgmental at first regarding Shasta’s lack of manners, she’s enjoyable and she grows… and she definitely did not deserve the maiming but took it graciously (even though i agree that she needed to understand the consequences of her actions, i do not agree with such physical punishment! Aslan what are you thinking).

one of my favourite parts of this book is the characters’ interactions - Aravis and Shasta, Bree and Hwin, Shasta and Corrin, Edmund and Susan and Lucy, Aravis and Lasaraleen. such great banter!!
