Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan
4.0

I loved the author's Demon's Lexicon series so, so much that the first time I tried to read this book, I was really disappointed. The first part goes on too long; the boy and girl have a telepathic bond and they don't know why and there's spooky stuff about the ruling family that comes back to their grand house in the Cotswolds. Eh. I'm sort of over Gothic romance in general since going through a big Daphne DuMaurier/Victoria Holt stage in my 20s. (Which is longer ago now than I care to think about.)

But thankfully there are no governesses here and Brennan is always very witty and then once the magic really got going in, say the last 2/5 of the book, it was an irresistible page turner. (You know how Milne says "What do Tiggers like best? Tiggers like malt"? Well, what do Ariels like? They like books about MAGIC. Good ones!) Anyway, now I can't wait for the sequel.
