The Handmaid's Tale (Graphic Novel) by Margaret Atwood

I have heard about the novel and tv shows for a few years now, but since there are some quite dark themes involved, I wasn't sure I wanted to commit a whole of time to either of them. That's where graphic novels save the day - they're like updated Cliff Notes!

I loved this book, in a horrified way. It sort of reminds me of Orwell's "1984", in that society has started treating it a little too much like a handbook instead of the fictional dystopian novel it's supposed to be: fear-mongering via controlled media? Primarily dependent on electronic finances? Forcing women to be incubators against their will? Doesn't it all sound uncomfortably familiar?

Books like these remind us that we can't afford to be complacent, and we should never take anything for granted.
