Dismas Hardy is pulled into helping a young man accused of murdering a prominent attorney. The man is a drug addict and doesn't remember what happened. The dead attorney turns out to be Abe Glitsky's illegitimate daughter. The accused is also the brother-in-law of Dismas's friend, Jeff, who is a newspaper journalist. While investigating what happened Abe is put on leave because he gives some information to Dismas and as a cop he isn't supposed to help the defense attorney. He continues to investigates and while having an argument with his daughter's paralegal he has a heart attack. His family and friends rally around trying to help him and he becomes involved with the paralegal.
Dismas gets some help from head guy at his law firm and lots of the young staffers. Another cop goes missing while investigating and a snitch is also killed. Several different stories are being pulled together. There is another attorney working on a case that is brought before the assistant D.A. that isn't going well and it seems to connect to this case. There is also a connection with a contractor who is trying to do work at the airport. There is a shady lawyer and former cop turned PI who also have ties to the murdered woman and some other cases and they also tie in with the D.A.
Quite a complicated tale with lots of angles and trying to keep everything straight can be tough. The family lives of Abe and Dismas are intertwined in the whole thing and there is a lot of legal information also. Good story.
