The story is contained (for the most part). I've heard complaints that it is in the Stormlight Archive order...between Rhythm of War and Wind and Truth, but it didn't bother me, one bit.
I know the overall trajectory of the Cosmere. In fact, it is the main reason why I've loved the Mistborn series SO much (even, at times...more than Stromlight Archive). Brandon Sanderson did an interview YEARS ago...that talked about the Midieval Fantasy, to Urban Fantasy, to Modern era Thriller (or such) to Science Fiction. That he'd never seen a series ever do that...and that he wanted to write a series that does that...while still using the magic of the planet/story and how it evolved with the technology of the time.
So, when I started this book...I saw what he was doing...and liked it.
Now, it took me time to figure out who/what Auxiliary was...which then gave me clue. Then the language that he used "naturally", then his connection to Wit, then later, his name (that I knew him from). That really got me excited...and NOW I want more.
This also showed the interaction of other planets with Canticle and how amazing these new characters are, and how they may be used in the future, which I think is BRIGHT (pun intended)...for The Sunlit Man. Ha!
