Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery

4.0

We finally finished this book. It was not my favorite of the Anne of Green Gables series, but there were parts that were very entertaining. As for appropriateness for kids, my girls, ages 8 & 10, both enjoyed it, although it took them a while to adjust to the writing style (for much of the book, Anne is writing letters to Gilbert). There are a few inappropriate things that are easy to skip over when reading aloud. First, I'd skip the entire chapter when Anne goes to visit Minerva Tomgallon, especially if you have a sensitive child. Mrs. Tomgallon relates to Anne why the Tomgallons seem to be under a curse by recounting every creepy death that happened in the house (and there were lots of them!). She also talked about other creepy relatives, one of whom was a husband that spanked his wife (I did skip that!). Later, towards the end of the book, it is finally explained why The Woman (a woman who lives next door to Windy Poplars with little Elizabeth and her grandmother) hates sweet, little Elizabeth so much. It seems it is because she had a "relationship" with Elizabeth's mother, whom died in childbirth. I wouldn't feel you are missing out if you skip this book....there are so many good books out there and this is a long one, however, if you want to read all the Anne books, then enjoy!
