I’m sorry. I really don’t know why this book never hooked me. It is not gothic, though. Nothing about it is gothic. There’s just a spooky forest which isn’t even that big of a deal IMO. I never really connected with the main character, the nightmare in her head was just so so, the love interest could’ve been cool but he was a bit one note, and the magic system was just sort of fine.
I saw some other reviewers compare to For the Wolf and The Wolf and the Woodsman. Yes, that is the vibe, but with even less world to it.
