Blood & Steel by Helen Scheuerer

5.0

This book devoured me and I devoured it.

It was so good, the worldbuilding, the forced proximity, the tension, the found family, the action and suspense, this book had it all!

The plot not only had some political intrigue, it had lots of fighting both training and against others, the magic system was so good with only those of royal blood to contain magic. And the romance wasn’t the main point of this book which I loved.

Thea is such a stubborn character and we see that throughout the book, we also see her realise some of it and learn. I love her relationship with Wren and how the sibling relationship isn’t all rainbows and they have their differences and arguments. Each character was different Cal and Kipp are certainly my favourite and the sibling bond they create with Thea just makes me smile.

Wilder was a morally grey mmc and I was hoping he would have a bit more personality and less brooding, but he was so supportive of Thea and her choice to become a guardian. We also see him at war with himself whether to let her let her in or to train her as her mentor even if it means losing their relationship. I was eating up the tension they had together and the way they fought together in battle. I did wish the romance was more slow burn with more yearning and even more tension!!

The plot was faced paced, the book didn’t feel like 500 old pages longs. We were always learning something or in some sort of training/fighting sequence or a spicy scene, even the times when they were calm and having fun it didn’t feel boring it felt right. It was very predictable especially the twist to Thea and Wren’s backstory so I would have liked more betrayal, more close hitting deaths and more secrets that will leave you in shock.

Off to read the second book and then the third and fourth because I need to read more of this!!
