my first impression of this book was "this is american psycho for the girlies with mommy issues" and i think that's still an apt description, but it's also so much more than that.
there's so much eerie horror, but there's also so many elements of traditional fairytales. it's critique of the beauty industry and the way it turns our self-loathing and self-consciousness against us for profit, and also of how cynical and unsupportive the community built around the beauty industry can be. it's about how mothers try their hardest to protect their daughters from falling prey to the same things they did, but can fail miserably at doing so and unintentionally lead them down the same path despite their best efforts.
it's about how even when he's trying to be kind and seductive, there's still something off about tom cruise. (okay, not really, but still.)
i loved this. i really, really did. even though my eyes glazed over as belle described her skincare routine (girl, we get it, that's your whole personality, i don't care, move on), i couldn't put the book down because i was determined to solve the mystery of why noelle had died the way she did. i think this is going to live in my head rent-free more than bunny did, which is saying a lot.
