Body Friend by Katherine Brabon

4.5

excellent. slow-paced, repetitive and monotonous, the narrative mirrors the life of our protagonist, living through the endless struggle for ‘recovery’ and inevitable ‘relapse’ of a chronic disease.

despite the lack of any real plot, i can’t stop thinking about this book & am desperate to purchase my own copy to highlight all the pages. (also, i need people in my life to read this so i can discuss it.)

themes include the exploration of self & identity, and chronic illness. very eye-opening for those who have never experienced autoimmunity.

Shortlisted for the 2024 Stella Prize, I think this one is a strong contender for the prize.
