American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

This book has been on my radar for a bit, and I’m very glad I finally had the chance to read it. It was gritty, emotional, and extremely relevant to the big political issues of today. A story of a mother desperate to get her and her son to the United States to avoid death, it felt like it should’ve been set in the 80s. I had to keep reminding myself that this is something that many families still go through today, and that our government has sadly decided to make it even more difficult for them to get to safety. I was distracted reading this by the thought of recommending it to my mom, only to realize she would probably not end up rooting for them to cross the border safely just because they didn’t do it the “legal way.” I’ll be thinking about this one for a while.
