Ballad for Sophie by Filipe Melo

5.0

This graphic novel was worth the wait for sure. It is stunning & dare I say my favorite graphic novel of all time. It’s heartachingly beautiful both in the artwork and the story itself.

If you’re a fan of the set up of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid then you might wanna give Ballad for Sophie a whirl. Adeline, an intrepid journalist is determined to interview renowned pianist Julien Dubois who has become a recluse. As the story unfolded I felt like I was sitting in her shoes, digesting the tale as it went. From the wrong side of the Nazi invasion of France to the doldrums of depression, drugs, and love not meant to be. What begins as a straightforward regaling of a mistreated kid’s arc into a grumpy older man slowly and thoughtfully evolves into an intimate set of listening sessions with an intricate character you will fall in love with totally.
