Garron Park
by Nordika Night
5 stars
Gritty and toxic enemies-to-lovers that totally delivered.
CW:
Fabulous, troubled characters who are much deeper than they first seem. Devon and Maddox are tough guys, hiding a lot of emotion and pain, and the only outlet they have for it is to take it out on each other. For some inexplicable reason, they're drawn to each other, and you can feel the chemistry right from the start.
I really enjoyed the back & forth between them and actually appreciated that they still kind of hate each other at the end. I find the 180 personality-swap in a lot of enemies-to-lovers books a bit jarring, and this felt more realistic.
Don't get me wrong, it's toxic AF. If anyone I knew were in a real-life relationship like this, I would be telling them to run (fast!), but in fiction I just adore that kind of dynamic.
I really liked the setting. Nordika Knight managed to convey such a great sense of place without being in any way judgmental. It was gritty, and dirty, and it kinda sucked a lot of the time, and yet our MCs have made themselves a home there. There's a feeling of community and, outside of some distasteful characters, a lot of support and mutual assistance from others living in the park. I liked that this wasn't a story about desperately trying to escape the trailer park, but a story about appreciating what you have, and how dreaming big means different things to different people.
One of my favourite things about this book was that the conflict is external to the relationship. It was high-tension, and there was plenty going on, but very low on emotional angst which is great 'cause I haven't been feeling up to that lately.
I loved Xavi and Nate (the MC's brothers), and thought the other secondary characters were well fleshed-out without taking over the action.
This ends with a solid HFN. I like where the author left the relationship between Dev & Madd, though there are a couple plot-things I thought were fishy and hope are covered in book 2:
Really looking forward to the next instalment!
Sexual content: Smoking hot, explicit, well-written.
