The past two books I have read by Andy Weir were fantastic. I loved the characters, their strengths, flaws, and everything in between. Unique writing style, tense action, accurate science, and silly jokes that had me laughing out loud. I’m starting to think he should stick with the “white dude stranded alone for the majority of the book” thing. Because this book is completely different. In a bad way. I’ll hand it to him, he went outside his comfort zone for this one. The protagonist is a Saudi Arabian woman. But I couldn’t get over the fact that this book is very “man writing woman.” He had a great concept, but it was hard to enjoy the plot with a woman who just makes crude jokes and over-sexualizing herself just to try to achieve the “not like the other girls” trope. It feels like something a middle school boy would write on Wattpad. Women are allowed to make these kinds of jokes, but the dick jokes and over-sexualizing herself (and her friends sexualizing her) was CONSTANT. Like, bro I’m trying to enjoy this totally epic plot you are amazing at writing!!!
