Crumbs by Phil Cummings

4.5

I received a copy of Crumbs by Phil Cummings and illustrated by Shane Devries from Scholastic Canada in exchange for an honest review.

In Crumbs, young Ella is waiting for her father to buy lunch when she notices a one-legged bird hopping from place to place in search of a morsel. Ella has nothing to give as she watches this hurt yet determined little boy. Down the road, a man walks through the streets asking quietly for a little something from the other pedestrians but everyone ignores him. Defeated, he sits down where Ella can see him. She watches as the bird hops its way over to the man but she cannot hear what he whispers to the bird before he takes out a paper bag from his pocket and gives the morsels to the bird. In watching this act of generosity, Ella and her father decide to go invite the man to have lunch with them - and of course, the crumbs and morsels Ella scatters so that the bird is also able to join them.

Such a beautiful and touching story that shows that sometimes those who need the most are also the ones who are most willing to give. It's a story about kindness and how it can spread from one to another.
