Wow. Solidifying becoming a fan after my second V.E. Schwab read. This seductively eerie centuries-spanning tale combines a few of my favorite things: plot twists (audible gasps included), interwoven timelines, and character development as deep as the midnight soil. The themes of immortality, the hunger for more, feminine rage, and freedom are steeped in each character’s story cyclically. The slow burn is the journey the reader takes to piece the mystery of how it all fits together. My small critique is the pacing towards the end: I found myself leaning away from Alice’s story, feeling more invested in the other timelines. An overall chilling and emotional read you’ll sink (your teeth) into. Haunting, dark, “and yet” - one of my new favorite phrases - beautiful.
