Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon. Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.

Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.

Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.

There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.

I'd resisted picking up Things We Never Got Over for quite some time despite it getting so much attention. However, one day, I found myself requesting a physical copy via the inter-library loan program at my local library to see what all of the hype was truly about. This was my first book by Lucy Score.

While I was immediately immersed into this story and couldn't put it down, I finished it having very mixed feelings. I liked the characters, the small town setting, the family (both biological and found) and thought the grumpy/sunshine trope was well done. Additionally, Waylay was a fantastic addition to the story. It also had the emotional depth I crave in my romance novels, but it's also incredibly long and could easily been edited down. For instance, the story itself would have been perfectly fine if the entire mystery aspect had been removed from the plot.

My biggest issue with this one were it was packed with cringey moment. Like why is it necessary to refer to female body parts by something other than their proper name? I thought it was maybe just a typo, but it persisted through the entire book and left an ick feeling about the whole thing. Like are we 12 or something?

Overall, Thing We Never Got Over, the first installment in the Knockemout series, was an addicting read with a fantastic cast of characters. Unfortunately, it also had its flaws and felt drawn out. It would've been better if the author had chosen to focus on the romance or the mystery and not both. Regardless, I do look forward to continuing the series and potentially checking out other books from Lucy Score in the future.
