  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated

A grandly written conclusion that left me upset and missing the first book. Mia's priorities and tastes wildly diverged from mine and I couldn't help but like her less and less as the book went on. Ashlinn can go fuck a gravebone blade, I couldn't stand her. My heart hurts for the deadboy with the heart of gold, he deserved so much better. Even Mister Kindly was treated unfairly. For someone so hung up on familia and prone to grudges when said familia is fucked with, Mia sure is quick to toss Tric and the cat out on their asses, the ones who would have her back in face of anything. Her character arc bent itself over backwards and it sits with me sourly.

All that said, I still love Kristoff's prose and wit and will be reading more from him.
