Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross

4.0

Ruthless Vows was a solid conclusion to the Letters of Enchantment duology. I wasn't blown out of the water by the writing, but I was satisfied with the ending and how everything wrapped up.

At the beginning of the novel, I was very frustrated by Violet. I didn't understand how she could mistake Forest, her brother, for Kitt, her husband. Especially considering they had all just been gassed and Forest had a mask to protect himself against the attack. How would Kitt have known to have a mask and where would he have gotten it considering the last time Violet had seen him he didn't? And then, it seemed like she completely forgot about Kitt for a long time. She was worried about pandering to Forest and keeping him comfortable while HER HUSBAND WAS MISSING IN ACTION AND POTENTIALLY DEAD. The vibes were weird.

However, Ross really hit her stride with writing when Kitt and Violet were able to write letters to each other again. It made me remember how strong their relationship was in Divine Rivals and why I was invested in them as a couple. This is also where the plot picks up. We got to see into Dacre's world below and read about Kitt working as a double agent. It definitely raised the stakes and my interest! From this point on things moved quickly and the ending was realistic to war.
