Filthy Rich Boys by C.M. Stunich
4.0
This is just a reminder for myself of who's who and what happened before we get book number two. Spoilers ahead... Aaaaall of the spoilers.
Note: This is not a review, just a recap.
- The FMC: Marnye Reed. Fifteen, poor, bullied, previously suicidal due to bullying, extreme wet blanket about most fun things, blushes at everything remotely sexual. Nicknamed "the Working Girl" at her new school, though she's a virgin, and "Charity", because she got a scholarship to a prep school, and is thus a charity case. Loves studying - wants to be a professional student forever and ever. Twice reaches the top spot on the "best student" list at her new school. Talented in playing the harp. Wants to believe in the good in people, but ends up being fooled by just about everyone in her life. Supposedly from a rough neighbourhood, but is still super sweet and innocent. Used to have long hair, but bitchy girls cut it after drugging her, and now she's rocking a rose gold bob of sorts. Has an alcoholic father and a crappy absent mother.
- The filthy rich boys: Tristan, Zayd, and Creed.
Tristan: Old money, ultimate jerkface, somewhat of a leader type. Felt Marnye up in a library, gave her a rose necklace, kissed her, etc. Burnt a super important book that Marnye liked. Supposedly meant to marry Harper eventually (Harper being the main evil bitch). Tall, super muscular, yet still 15, drives cars, drinks, etc.? Competes with Marnye for the top student spot.
Zayd: A rocker, covered in tattoos (at the tender age of 15...), sings in some band, has an absent father who is also a rocker dude, is the nicest and funniest of the three (or pretends to be). Gets to take Marnye to a ball, before the shit hits the fan. Made some chocolates for Marnye, and apparently used a loooot of time and effort in making them. Seems to be attached to Becky, who is bitch number 2, and a fellow harpist (but crappier at it than Marnye).
Creed: New money, his mom gave Marnye the scholarship, is a bit colder/more stand-offish than the rest, but supposedly has wicked sexual chemistry with Marnye. Is the brother of Marnye's only female friend at the school. Spread the info/news of Marnye being suicidal in the past by reading her application essay letter thingy. Wanted to know who his sister (Miranda) was sleeping with ('twas a girl), and won a poker game against Marnye, who then had to share any info she discovered about the sister. This eventually lead to the girls falling out, and Marnye losing her school friends (a guy called Andrew, too, who is gay and whose secret was uncovered along with Creed's sister's).
The three boys run the school, obviously, and they belong to some secret society called the Infinity (or something), with matching infinity symbol tattoos. The group isn't too well explained yet, but they do dares(?) and bets, party and play poker.
Oh, and there's also a boy called Zach, who used to bully Marnye and sort of likes her now. They also dated for a while, but in secret, because Zach didn't want to tell anyone. And there's also a girl called Lizzie who used to date Tristan and still totally loves him. Lizzie met Marnye, wanted to be her friend, but it all fell apart due to Zach and Lizzie being in cahoots with each other over a bet that stated Zach had to bully a girl so much that she'd kill herself. Sooo it was Lizzie's fault that Zach bullied Marnye and eventually made Marnye want to kill herself.
- What happens, in a nutshell: Ms Charity-case moves to a new school, is hated by almost everyone for being poor and for stinking up the classy place with her low-class raggedy presence. Gets bullied by the Idols, aka 3 girls (mostly Becky and Harper) and the 3 boys mentioned above. Then, after some silly bullying crap stuff happens over some weeks, she ends up playing poker with the boys. She wins immunity from bullying for a month, during which she gets close to the boys. After the month is up, the girls are bitchy to her, but the boys are nice, too nice even. They all kiss her, etc. There's an end-of-the-year dance thing, to which Marney has to choose to take one boy - she chooses Zayd who is the least attached to anyone and anything else (has no future bride, is free to live his life, etc.). But after the dance, at some concert, where Marnye plays the harp, the bitchy girls beat her up, show everyone vids of her making out with the 3 boys, and pour paint on her, Carrie-style. And it is revealed that none of the boys really liked her during the spring term - they had just made a bet about who would be the first one to make Charity fall for a rich boy. Aaaand they all think they have now destroyed Marnye and driven her away for good. Marnye finds that she has changed, though, and she won't give up so easily. And so with her new tougher self, she challenges Tristan to a new year at school - claiming she will not back down, and that she will be back after the summer.
And then she plots her revenge. Dun, dun, duuuuun.
The end! For now.
