Frozen 2: Forest of Shadows by Kamilla Benko

4.0

A bridging tale between movies 1 and 2 for any Frozen fan.

So, I’m not a die-hard Frozen fan and to be honest, I forgot the movies except for a few scattered scenes I recall. However, this book does a great job in referencing the events from the first movie without it needing to be known in detail to understand what’s going on in the book.

This book was frostily enjoyable and although there were some scenes that made me frustrated, they were ultimately a key life lesson. The communication between both sisters is lacking and causes misunderstandings leading to incorrect assumptions and further distance. Elsa and Anna have different personalities and although they understand each other quite a bit there is some disparity between the two. I liked how the book doesn’t make them confront each other about their feelings directly but allows each character to learn the other’s feelings through the events in the book.

The story is captivating and keeps the reader involved since there’s a mysterious blight making everything fall asleep. But that’s not the only mystery in Arendelle, there’s more and each comes with its own set of challenges. I enjoyed how each mystery was intertwined but not evidently related such that it gave away the ending. Also, the story is mainly told from a narrative perspective in Anna’s viewpoint which gives a lighthearted yet aspiring tone to the story.

The characters are from what I recall, exactly as they are portrayed in the movie. If you don’t recall or haven’t watched the movie, that’s fine since the story does a good job in setting up the characters and their personalities. There are quite a bit of side characters but honestly I didn’t like them as much as Elsa and Anna. Although, we do see quite a bit of Kristoff and very less of Olaf and Sven. I kind of wished the entire gang was out on the adventure to solve the mystery.

I do recommend this book to anyone, it’s a great book with a lot of messages and got me out of a reading slump. However, if you’re not going to be watching the movies I recommend you don’t read the epilogue since it ties into the second movie. Personally, I think I need to go re-watch both films during these wintery month!
