Each Kindness
by Jacqueline Woodson
Jacqueline Woodson's Coretta Scott King Honor book, Each Kindness, tells about a young girl who moves to a new school and because her clothes look old and ragged Chloe and her friends do not show her any kindness. However, Maya shows kindness to them every day, by trying to share her toys with them. One day Maya does not show up to school and the teacher does a lesson about kindness. She drops a small stone into a bowl of water and says, "This is what kindness does. Each little thing we do goes out, like a ripple into the world." After that Chloe waits for Maya to come back to school so she can show her kindness, but as the days pass, and Maya does not come back the chance to show her kindness is forever gone. This book is beautifully illustrated by E.B. Lewis. His water color pictures brings a softness and gentleness to this book that really portrays the theme well. This will be a great book to begin my school year with.
