Foster by Claire Keegan
4.0

I am usually quite sceptical when it comes to reading short stories. I don't have enough time to connect with any character but just enough time to become invested. Foster by Claire Keegan kept me waiting for a hook, some sort of emotional catch, and ends the book just when I'm on the verge of tears.

This book follows a young girl who goes to stay with “her mother's people” for the summer while her mother is in her final trimester of pregnancy. Her relationship with her guardians is never defined, and it doesn't need to be until the very end.

This story is so dazzlingly simple, with days spent going to the well, the town of Gorey, and running to the postbox. But, while the reader is caught off guard, a personal connection is slowly building between, not just the young girl and her guardians, but with the reader and the guardians as we see the world through the young girl's eyes.

This short story/novella will break your heart will also leaving you with a bittersweetly wholesome feeling.
